The Philippines is a state having quite different chracteristics compared with other ASEAN states. It is located at 5°-21° North and 117°-126° East. South China Sea is the source of various territorial conflicts, both bilateral or multilatera. The main conflicting region is the Spratly Island with its 170 geographical features. Spratly Island has been disputed because it contains rich oil and gas reserve and other resources beneath. China officialy asserted its legitimacy upon South China Sea in 1992, and the Philippines agreed to cooperate with China. There are several reasons why the political behaviour of the Philippines is changed from confrontation to cooperation with China.en_US
