The crisis in Ukraine became Russia's momentum that Russia could defend the country's interests, especially in protecting ethnic citizens in Ukraine, the gas lines through the Ukraine state, and the NATO expansion that made Russia worried that Ukraine would no longer be a neutral country and join for NATO.
