| dc.description.abstract | A nurse’s personal capacity can be understood as the combination of their knowledge, skills, and attitude. However, these can not static attributes; rather they can dynamic and always in need of revision. In Indonesia, the availability Continuing Competence Program (CCP) depend on a wide range of variables. In light of this, this study explores the perceived availability to these type of programs by Indonesia nurses, an exploration that aims to ultimately increase their personal capacity, thus improving the level of care for Indonesian patients.
This study was a focused Ethnography, the data for which were gathered from participant-observation (PO), in-depth interviews (II) and focused group discussions (FGD) given by 25 practicing nurses in Muhammadiyah Lamongan hospital in Indonesia. From this data, there five themes emerged, thus offering a basis CCP. The five key themes are as follows: Theme 1:“Being endorsed by a policy maker”, Theme 2:“Joining the up-grading capacity program”, Theme 3: “Selecting prospective program”, Theme 4: “Sharing group experiences” and Theme 5: “Being curiosity”
The findings suggest that informants perceive differences in the availability of existing personal capacity. Generally, they perceived CCP as serviceable and participated in them because it was required and helped them to retain their jobs. The strategies of theses programs were in-house training, ex-house training, on the job training, group sharing experiences, continuous supervision and collaborative learning. The purpose of these strategies is to improve capacity of nursing care expanding skills and knowledge while keeping them up to date. To achieve this, it is important to include local higher education and collaboration with another health care provider as appropriate steps forward. | en_US |
