dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is result from combination of insulin resistance and dysfunction of insulin-producing pancreatic β cells1. Pharmacological agent is known difficult to achieve good glycemic control2. Besides that, consumption of insulin has the risk of hypoglycemic, affect daily life and doesn’t prevent DM complication1. Nowadays mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) is self renewable cells can control hyperglycemia and improve the function of pancreatic islets3. Umbilical chord (UC) MSC has superior potential to differentiate into insulin producing cell. It is easy to be obtained and low immunogenicity compared with the another source4. Methods: We report the case of a T2DM patient who was successfully treated by MSC in PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital Yogyakarta. The patient agreed to be treated by umbilical chord MSC. All protocols and manipulations used in this case were approved by local ethical committee in our hospital. 8 ml UC-MS is delivered to gastroduodenal artery and pancreaticoduodenal artery through the microcatheter under local anesthesia . Results: There is reduction level HbA1c in first 1 month (7,2%→5,4%). Blood glucose level never reached ≥ 200 mg/dl in 3 months post UC-MSC injection. Insulin is not given in last 3 months. Repeated MSC injection is acquired in 12 weeks after the first MSC injection3,4 Conclusion: The primary results have suggested the administration of UC-MSC may be a new direction of T2DM treatment in Interventional Radiology. | en_US |
