      Abstract
This study was conducted in order to evaluate the aims and objectives and language skills used in the textbooks. Qualitative content analysis was applied as the research design, and checklists of evaluation developed by Cunningsworth (1995) and Garinger (2002) were used as the instrument to analyze the textbooks. Textbook for grade XI semester 2 (textbook 1) and grade VIII semester 2 (textbook 2) written by pre-service teachers at EED of UMY were analyzed. The result shows that in aims and objectives aspect, textbook 1 fulfilled 55% the criteria while textbook 2 fulfilled 77%. In language skills aspect, textbook 1 fulfilled 54% whereas textbook 2 fulfilled 73% of the criteria. In terms of aims and objectives, the pre-service teachers at EED of UMY have to improve their competence in terms of comprehensiveness of the needs for completing the material in the textbook based on the curriculum. Meanwhile, material and learning stages in receptive skill also need to be recovered. Finding this study may be insightful for lecturers in improving pre-service teachers’ competence in creating textbook. Pre-service teachers at EED of UMY also can know the aspect that should be enhanced. Further, EED of UMY may allow the textbook with good criteria to be implemented where the pre-service teachers do their internship program. Lastly, it may be insightful for other researchers as the reference in conducting same research.
