dc.description.abstract | The rise of greenhouse gases (GHG) emission in the atmosphere are the result of industrial activities that have been running for more than 150 years and causing the climate to change. The international community is trying to address the issue of climate change by having a binding international agreement under the United Nations Framework Conventionon Climate Change named Kyoto Protocol. Even though the industrialized countries taking more responsible to the climate change, the United States as one of the largest GHG emitter did not ratify the protocol. It raises a question when small country like Singapore took a decision to ratify the protocol even though they are contributed only on small amount of GHG comparing to the United States.
The objective of this research is to analyze on the reason why did Singapore ratify the Kyoto Protocol. To conduct this research the author use qualitative method by using secondary data such as books, journals, articles, news, and other literary sources. As the findings, this research prove that the interests of Singapore behind the ratification to the protocol is to pursue economic opportunities that provided behind the Kyoto Protocol.
