      Abstract
The development of new media has lead to the high engagement of new technological communication devices among people these days. The use of smartphones, laptops, tabs has spread among generations. However, each generation has its own traits and attitude toward their gadget activities. For example, Shelley, Trane & Sullman (2006) found that older cohord saw less benefit of IT usage for political activities. This paper tries to uncover the generation difference of using gadget among Gen X (born year 1965 to 1975), Gen Y (born year 1976 to 1991) and Z (1992 to 2010). Their different traits and attitudes toward this communication devices would answer the question whether there is any different behavior among those generations. This research was conducted in Yogyakarta, a provice in Indonesia round 900 respondents mixed from their generations (X, Y, Z) and their place of origin (urban and village societies). The main finding shows that Gen X tends to use their smartphones simply for communicating like texting, calling and chatting. While Gen Z is more attached to their devices since they are not only use it for comunicating with others but also for entertaining such as listening music, watching videos and playing games.
