      CORRELATION BETWEEN PARENTING STYLE AND STUDENTS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH YOGYAKARTA

      Abstract
      Parenting becomes the most important thing in preparing children before they should be in school environment and social environment. The objective of this research is to find out students’ parenting style, students’ academic achievement, and correlation between parenting styles’ academic achievement. The design of research used in this study is quantitative research. The population took from Education English Department Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta as much as around 152 students in 2013. The sample result taken 20 % or more from the whole population is 33 students. The method will used on this research is descriptive quantitative and correlation method. Quantitative method is applied to analyze students’ academic achievement and parenting styles’ academic achievement. The reseach found that the average score of democratic parenting style is 3.14, while the permissive and authoritarian style is about 2.30 and 2.18. Students academic achievement was shown trough the Grade Point Average (GPA). The highest GPA point from those 33 respondents is 3.90, coming from 1 respondent and the lowest GPA point is 2.90, coming from 2 respondents. There is no significant relevance between parenting style and students academic achievement as shown by the significance point 0.654 (sig.> 0.05).
