      Abstract
      Idioms which are related to figurative language have a great extent use in daily conversation. But ironically, most of the students get difficult in understanding the meaning of idiom. Related to the mater above, the researcher was interested in studying the difficulties in understanding idiomatic expression faced by English Education department’s students. The aims from this research is to investigate the difficulties in understanding English idiomatic expression, and what are the efforts that students used to coped with the difficulties. The data collection technique used for this research were test and interview that the result of the test was used as the guideline to gain the depth information. Based on the result, the researcher found that the first difficulties faced by students to understand the meaning of idiom is the students do not realize when dealing with idiom. Furthermore, the students always get the solution to cope with the difficulties, such as using paraphrasing to understand the meaning of an idiom. Finally, it is expected that the result of this study would be useful for English Education Department’s students, the lecturer, and other researcher.
