The aim of this study is to reveal the effect of cigarette smoke and kretek cigarette smoke on spatial memory by measuring the eight arms radial maze performance on rat. In this study rats were devided randomy into three groups : control group, first treatment group and second treatment group. Each group consist of five rats. In thirty days, control group was not given any treatment, the first treatment group was given inhalation of cigarette smoke and the second treatment group was given inhalation of kretek cigarette smoke for 30 minutes twice a day. After the 22nd day, the rats were adapted into eight arm radial maze for ten minutes for seven consecutive days. In the 28th day, a bait was given on the tip, on the middle and the door of arms. In the 29th day, a bait was given on those parts of arms and in the 30th day, bait was given on those parts of arm axcept the door. Then, within 12 days subsequently bait was given on the tips of arm only, and a test of eight arms radial maze was conducted for every mouse to test their performance, consisting of the number of arms of radial maze that were entered by rat and their errors in entering the radial maze arms. In the 43 ed day, all rats were decapitated followed by taking out is brain and then were processed for microscopic features prepartions of hippocampus. This study showed that the rats after treated with cigarette smoke, an increase in spatial memory as shown by their performances in eight arms radial maze were better than the rats treated with kretek cigarette smoke. Microscopic feature of hippocampus of rats showed no difference in the thickness of CA1 pyramidal lamina hippocampus between each groups.
