      Abstract
This study aims to describe the development of sharia banking in Britain (2004-2016). This research is qualitative research with descriptive method by using secondary data sourced from books, scientific journals, articles (both printed media and electronic), and report from the official institution of government or non-government. The analysis used in this research is by using descriptive method analysis which is a research which tries to reveal facts of an event, object, activity, process, and human “as it is” at present time or possible range of time in respondent’s memory. The results of this study show that Islamic Economics in Britain was first applied in the 1980s, but the beginning of the British awakening in applying the Islamic economic system (especially the banking sector) occurred in mid-2004 with the establishment of Islamic Bank of Britain (IBB) by the investors from Middle East. Although Britain is a country with a minority of Muslim population, but the growth of sharia banking and finance in 2004-2016 is very good. It can be seen from the rapid growth of sharia banking and finance in Britain and to this day quantitatively it has had more than 20 banks which offer sharia financial services, 5 of them have fulfilled the requirements of sharia or entirely sharia. In addition, qualitatively, the development of sharia banking is proven by the development of regulation and institutions of sharia banking existence. A very important factor in the development of sharia banking and finance in Britain is the strong support from the government regulation in creating economic opportunities and benefits. This is proven by the British government that allows conventional banks to open sharia savings account services.
