      Abstract
      This research aims to find out pre-service teachers’ perception on the types of authentic materials and the reason of using them. It also aims to find out the benefits and challenges of using authentic materials. This research was conducted in EED UMY and used descriptive qualitative research design. This research has three major findings. The first finding was regarding the types of authentic materials that were used by pre-service teachers of EED UMY and the reason using them. They were audio, visual, audiovisual, and printed materials. The types of authentic material found in this research of audio consisted of song. The types of authentic material found in this research of visual consisted of pictures from internet, photo, drawing, and poster. The types of audiovisual consisted of video. Then, the types of authentic material found in this research of printed material consisted of newspaper, story, magazine, letter, recipes, and invitation card. The second finding was about the benefits of authentic material that perceived by preservice teachers of EED UMY. They were increasing students’ overall language proficiency, giving cultural information, motivating students in learning, and providing real world material to the students. The third finding was about the challenges of using authentic materials faced by pre-service teachers of EED UMY. They were needed more preparation, high level of grammar, using difficult vocabularies, and containing inappropriate content.
