      Abstract
      Background: Hypertension is a non-infectious disease that is quite dangerous because it does not cause specific and physical symptoms. Many hypertensive sufferers have recently noticed hypertension in the last 5 years and are diagnosed in emergency service, and hypertension also causes many complications. So-called silent killer disease. Due to the high prevalence of hypertension, it is necessary to preventive promotive efforts. One effort is to know the understanding of hypertensive patients to the disease and also as respondents in this study. Methods: Methods were performed on 152 respondents in Sleman District and had their blood pressure checked at Puskesmas. The research started by filling out informed consent sheets first and then the blood pressure was examined by the researcher three times to take the average blood pressure. After that, the respondents were asked to literate the WHO hypertension questionnaire. The analysis used the descriptive method to find out. Then the qualitative anlisis using Microsoft Excel. Results: A total of 56.5% of hypertensive patients were diagnosed in less than 5 years. 38.33% of the 152 responders diagnosed on emergency services .. A total of 34.86% of respondents sometimes checked blood pressure. 66,4% respondenrutin check blood pressure at puskesmas.Sebanyak 76,31% of respondent knowing hypertensive complication only 35,33% know that stroke as complication caused by hypertension. Approximately 56.58% of respondents did not obey medication. 25.58% of respondents drink only when the drug symptoms. Results: Most people with hypertension do not routinely check their blood pressure despite knowing the complications in a fundamental way. Likewise with the adherence to taking medication, many patients with hypertension who are not obedient in taking medicine because only taking the drug when symptoms arise. This shows the lack of understanding of hypertensive patients to the disease
