Students’ Perceptions on the Implementation of Daily English Speech Program at the Dormitory of a Private University in Yogyakarta
Abstract
Daily English Speech Program (DESP) is one of the programs conducted at the dormitory of a private university in Yogyakarta. The main activity of this program is public speaking. This program has been implemented since 2010. However, there are some phenomena during the implementation of the program. This research aims to explore the advantages that students gained from DESP and to figure out students challenges in joining the program. This research employed descriptive qualitative research design to answer the research questions. An open-ended interview was used as the data collection method. Then, there were four participants involved in this research. They were non-English Department students who actively participated in the program. The finding shows that there were some advantages that students got from the program, namely reducing anxiety, improving communication skill, developing English skill, helping studens to know and memorize new vocabulary, and helping students to gain. Besides, it revealed some challenges faced by the students in joining the program. Those challenges are choosing topic, dealing with linguistic aspect, facing afraid of mistake, preparing the material and managing audience.
