      Abstract
Kenaf/PP composite has been used in an automotive application. The addition of CaCO3microparticle can improve the mechanical properties of kenaf/PP composite. This research aims to fabricate kenaf powder/PP composite and to study the influence of CaCO3 on tensile properties of the composite. Kenaf powder reinforced PP composites with 5 wt. % kenaf powder content and the addition of CaCO3 (0, 10 and 20 wt. %) were fabricated using an injection molding machine at the laboratory of Department of Mechanical Engineering, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). The fabrication process was done at barrel temperature of 200oC, mold temperature 70oC, injection pressure 11.9 MPa and holding pressure 9 MPa with cycle time 40 seconds. Tensile test of the composite specimens was conducted based upon the ISO 527 1b: 2012. Fracture tensile surface was observed with an optical microscope. The results showed that tensile strength the composite increases with the increase of a mass fraction of CaCO3 and the higher value reached by the composite with the addition of 20% CaCO3. However, this research did not show the desired results, because kenaf powder could not be injected completely. Thus, the injection molding machine in this facility could not be used to fabricate the composite using the fiber powder.
