      Abstract
Background : One of the factors to maintain the oral hygiene is saliva. Salivary flow rate influenced by several factors, one of them is caused by the mechanical factors by using of orthodontic appliances in oral cavity. Using removable orthodontic appliances may affect salivary flow rate and salivary pH by the increasing of salivary flow rate. Increasing salivary flow rate may prevent the pathogen microorganisms colonization by optimizing the environmental condition in the oral cavity. Objectives : To identify the effect of salivary flow rate after placement of removable orthodontic appliances. Methods : The study design is analytic observational, conducted by cross sectional. The study population consisted of 20 subjects a control group and 20 subjects of removable orthodontic appliance users as at RSGM Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta for measured the unstimulated salivary flow rate with spitting method. Samples were choosen with purposive sampling. The result were analyzed by using Independent Sample t-Test. Results : The study showed that there was a difference of salivary flow rate in the group of removable orthodontic appliances users and in control group as evidenced by the results of analysis test by using Independent sample t-Test of 0,004 (p<0.05). the mean value of unstimulated salivary flow rate (USFR) in the group of removable orthodontic appliances users was 0,7087 gram, whereas in the control group or non-users of removable orthodontic appliances was 0.4926 gram. Conclusion in this study, there is an effect using removable orthodontic appliances to unstimulated salivary flow rate.
