      Abstract
Background: Cancer is rapid growth of new cells that proliferate progressively with irregular pattern. Cancer patients need to undergo a lot of medications such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc. These therapies often decrease patient’s quality of life and also lead to depression. Depression will inhibits immune response of the body to fight against proliferation of cancer cells. This study aims to identify the effect of Spiritual Emotional Freedom Technique (SEFT) to reduce depression level in cancer patients Method: This study use quantitative approach with randomised controlled trial. Population in this study is cancer patients in PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Hospital and Yayasan Kanker Indonesia (YKI) D.I. Yogyakarta. Samples were recruited using consecutive sampling. 20 respondents were divided into two groups: 10 respondents as the control group and 10 respondents as the intervention group. Level of depression in intervention group and control group were measured using Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) questionnaire. Intervention group was given SEFT (set up, tune in, and tapping) in three times for 30 minutes before level of depresion in both groups were measured again using BDI-II. Data were analyzed by using Wilcoxon test and independent t test. Results: The mean results from depression screening pretest and post test in control group were 26,33 and 26,50, while in intervention group the results were 29,33 and 13,50. The outcome of analysis independent sample t test toward depression screening score before and after therapy of SEFT in intervention group showed p value = 0.000 (p<0,05), in control group the p value = 0.342 (p>0,05). The result of depression level change between both group showed p=0.000 (p<0,05). Conclusion: The results of pretest and post test depression screening score in control and intervention groups showed statistically significant difference (p<0,05) compared with the group that did not receive SEFT therapy.
