      Abstract
Background and aims: Diabetes mellitus can cause complications on kidney and retina. One of the disorders caused by diabetes mellitus on kidney is decreased hemoglobin level. The aim of the study was to see whether this decreased hemoglobin level is also happens in the diabetic retinopathy patients. Methods: Cross-sectional study used with the data taken from the study by JOGED.COM (Jogja Eye Diabetic Study in the Community) in 2017. Results: We found 182 diabetics patients, 47 patients suffering diabetic retinopathy and 135 patients without diabetic retinopathy. The patients consist of 49 men and 133 women with average age of 59,56 (±10,123) years old. Patients without diabetic retinopathy had hemoglobin level with average of 12,94 (±1,555) gr/dL, while patients suffered from diabetic retinopathy had hemoglobin level with average of 12,55 (±1,424) gr/dL. After analyzing the data with non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test, obtained p value equal to 0,099 (p>0,05) Conclusions: These findings suggest that there were some differences between the diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy and diabetic patients with diabetic retinopathy while statistically not significant.
