      Abstract
Background: Shift workers are workers with a rotating work system within 24 hours. Shift workers are at risk of experiencing impaired sleep quality. Poor sleep quality can cause health problems such as gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular disorders, metabolic syndrome and other health problems. One alternative action to improve sleep quality is qigong exercise. Qigong exercise is a therapy of moderate intensity exercise that can provide feedback and reduce the hormone cortisol in the body so that it can increase the production of the hormone melatonin at night. Objective: To determine the effect of qigong exercise on the sleep quality of shift workers at Muhammadiyah University in Yogyakarta. Methods: This study uses pre-experimental methods. The design used is one-group pre-post test design. The sampling technique in this study used a total sampling amounting to 16 respondents of shift workers at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta according to the inclusion criteria getting morning, afternoon and night shifts. The instrument of this study used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire and qigong exercise videos. Qigong exercise is done 3 times a week for 150 minutes a week. Data analysis using frequency distribution and paired t test. Result: At the pretest the mean PSQI score was 8.25±1.612 while the posttest was 6.875±1.746. The results of statistical tests with paired t test were 0.001 (p <0.05) which means that there is an influence of qigong exercise on sleep quality in shift workers. Conclusion: There is the effect of qigong exercise on the sleep quality of shift workers at Muhammadiyah University in Yogyakarta. Suggestion: Qigong gymnastics can be applied to improve sleep quality for shift workers.
