      Abstract
The use of cosmetics in the market is very common especially by women. Whitening cream is a cosmetic that is often used because it can provides effects that whiten facial skin and increase self-confidence. Whitening cream has several components that have their respective functions. Retinoic acid is one of the ingredients that is prohibited to use inwhitening cream, because it can cause dry, teratogenic, skin burning (fetal defects). The purpose of this study was to find out whether whitening creams circulating in the market in Kebumen district contained retinoic acid, both those that were BPOM-registered and those that were not registered by BPOM. In this study, 20 samples of face whitening cream which have selected which did not have BPOM registration numbers and 5 sample of face whitening cream samples that had BPOM numbers, were selected and taken from Kebumen regency. The method used for the analysis is Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The mobile phase used is n-hexane and acetone by comparison (6: 4). The stationary phase used was silica gel F 254nm and then seen under 254nm UV light which then calculated the Rf value. The results of the study showed that from 20 samples which werenot registrered on BPOM, there were 3 samples suspected of containing retinoic acid namely cream number 1 (Rf value: 0.63); cream number 4 (Rf value: 0.64); cream number 17 9Rf value: 0,65); meanwhile from 5 samples which were registered on BPOM, there were 2 samples that contain retinoic acid, namely cream number 21 (Rf value: 0.65) and cream number 22 (Rf value: 0.65).
