      Abstract
The high maintenance cost of railroad construction is one of the problems in Indonesia. Modification of the ballast layer with asphalt mixture is expected to increase the durability of the ballast layer structure so that maintenance costs can be minimized. This study aims to determine the effect of modification of the ballast layer with asphalt based on weight, vertical deformation, stress, strain, modulus of elasticity, and abrasion on the ballast layer. The asphalt used in this study is asphalt penetration 60/70. The samples in this study were clean ballast, fouled ballast, clean ballast + 2% asphalt in 1 layer, fouled ballast + 2% asphalt in 1 layer, clean ballast + 2% asphalt in 3 layers, and fouled ballast + 2% asphalt in 3 layers. Mold used box with dimensions of 400 x 200 x 300 mm. The manual compaction method is carried out 50 times on one third of the ballast layer. Compressive test was conducted in 2 cycles with a 4000 kg load using the Micro-computer Universal Testing Machine (UTM). The test results prove that fouled ballast + 2% asphalt in 1 layer gets the highest value change in vertical deformation and modulus of elasticity in cycle 2. Overall modification of ballast layer with 2% asphalt penetration 60/70 increases vertical deformation and decreases the modulus of elasticity in the ballast layer, but can reduce the abrasion value that occurs in the ballast layer.
