      Abstract
Breakage and high cost of railroad maintenance are problems faced in Indonesian railways. The addition of asphalt level modification in the ballast layer is expected to be able to improve the quality of service and maintenance of the ballst layer. The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanical properties of the ballast-asphalt layer in the form of deformation values, modulus of elasticity and reciprocal modification abrasion. The study used compressive test method by UTM (Universal Testing Machine) with a beam-shaped object with dimensions 400 x 200 x 300 mm. The test material was fresh and fouled ballast without mixture, fresh and fouled ballast with modified mixture 4% asphalt content in 1 layer and 3 layers. From the test results show that the addition of bitumen was able to reduce deformation and increase the modulus of elasticity of ballast especially in asphalt modification 4% 3 layers. With the addition of asphalt the value of abrasion material was also getting smaller so that it can minimize the damage to the ballast layer because the asphalt layer can fill the cavity and protect the recipient layer material.
