      Abstract
The private Islamic junior high school in Yogyakarta has a problem especially in students’ discipline in the classroom. The teacher should have appropriate strategies to enforce students’ discipline in the classroom. This study aimed to investigate English teachers’ strategies to enforce the students’ discipline in the classroom and the challenges faced by teachers in implementing each strategy. This study was conducted at a private Islamic junior high school in Yogyakarta. This study used qualitative approach, and the researcher selected two English teachers as the participants. The participants were chosen using purposive sampling technique. In addition, individual interview as the data collection method was used by the researcher to find out teachers’ strategies to enforce students’ discipline in the classroom and challenges faced by teachers in implementing each strategy. Regarding the result of this study, the teachers used several strategies to handle students’ discipline in the classroom such as making a learning contract, giving warning, giving punishment, having personal approach, having communication, and student-directed. Moreover, there were also several challenges in implementing each strategy to students’ misbehavior in the classroom. Those were the students’ different characters, students’ unwillingness, students’ louder voice, students’ embarrassment, many absences, the repetition of the mistakes, and consistency in implementing rules. Therefore, it is recommended to the teachers to have appropriate strategies and rules to enforce students’ discipline in the classroom. Besides, it is also recommended to the students to obey the rules in the teaching and learning process.
