      Abstract
Background: Stainless steel finger spring 0,6 mm austenitic type is one of active components of removable orthodontic. pH acidity, temperature, corrosive material are factors of corrosion occurence on removable appliance. pH acidity alteration of saliva after acid consumption can stimulates corrosion rate marked by the release of ions and weight loss on the appliance. Meanwhile the long using removable appliance is among 13,4  10,3 months. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of pH (3,5) and the long time of immersion in artificial saliva to corrosion rate on stainless steel finger spring 0,6 mm. Method: The design of this study is experimental laboratory with weight loss method and immersion test in artificial saliva at pH 3,5 and pH 6,7 for 6,2 and 47,4 hours. This study measures the corrosion rate with weight loss after immersion test and macrocopis test with metallurgic microscop to determine the macroscopis changing. Result: The results of weight loss measurements in all treatments showed a difference in weight before and after the study indicating the release of ions and the rate of corrosion on the finger spring wire. The Independent Sample t-test showed no significant difference corrosion rate analysis of immersion at pH 3,5 and 6,7 both at 6,2 hours immersion and 47,4 hours. While the analysis of the corrosion rate on the immersion time of 6,2 hours and 47,4 hours has a significant difference both at pH 3,5 and 6,7. Conclusion: The corrosion rate and weight loss of 0,6 mm stainless steel finger spring has occurred in immersion for 6,2 hours at pH 3,5 and 6,7.
