      Abstract
Welding is the one of connecting metal methods which is widely used in the manufacturing industry. Welding is usually used for the automotive, aircraft and shipping industry. One welding method that is widely used in industry is the GMAW method. Recently, several methods have been created to improve the quality of GMAW welding joints, one of them is the 2-layer tandem MIG welding method. This research uses a 2-layer tandem MIG welding method with welding material, that is aluminum alloy 5052. Variations in the distance between the electrodes was used in this study to determine the physical and mechanical properties of the weld metal, because these factors can affect weld quality. This study used AA5052 material with a size of 400 mm x 150 mm x 5 mm which was welded using the 2-layer tandem MIG method with variations in the distance between the electrodes 18 mm, 27 mm and 36 mm. The welding current used was 130 A, the voltage was 23 V, and the argon flow was 17 liters / minute. Tests carried out include measurements of distortion, microstructure, hardness, tensile and impact.Based on the test result it is known that the specimens with 36 mm electrode distance have the greatest distortion. The highest hardness was found in specimens with 27 mm electrode distance variation with hardness values at BM = 56.53 VHN0.1, HAZ = 52.75 VHN0.1 and WM = 48.46 VHN0.1. The highest tensile strength value was found in specimens with 18 mm electrode distance that is 160 MPa and the highest impact value was found in specimens with 27 mm electrode distance of 0.46 J / mm2.
