Characteristics of Corneal Foreign Bodies, Study in Central Java,Indonesia
Abstract
Corneal foreign body is one of the main causes of
blindness. The effects can be mild to severe infections.
In some countries, the incidences of corneal foreign body
have their own characteristic. This is due to
enviromental, geographical, occupational, behavioral
and other factors. This study is to determine the
characteristics of corneal foreign body in Indonesia.
Non-experimental study design with analytic
observational method with cross-sectional study was
conducted. The sample was male and female more than
10 years old with a history of exposure to corneal foreign
bodies less than 8 days. Data were analyzed with
univariate test. Corneal foreign bodies in 30 people (40.9
± 1.2 yo), are more common in men (76.7%) than in
women 23.3%), in the age 1-40 years old. The location
of material is more common in paracentral (66.7%) on
the right eye. Most of the type of material is gram iron
(53.3%). Welder is the most occupational risk factor
(30%) and the others were laborers, farmers, traders,
housewives, builders, teachers and students. The
characteristics of corneal foreign body in Indonesia are
more common in men, 31-40 years old, paracentral, right
eye, with gram iron material, in welder.
