Caries Risk Assessment In Orthopedically Handicapped Children Aged 6-12 year old at SLB Negeri 1 Bantul Yogyakarta
Abstract
Background.Dental caries includes in the sixth highest health problem in Indonesia. This has huge impact in the quality of life of people especially among the school-age students with orthopedically handicapped, due to their dependence in the process of cleaning teeth and mouth.
Aim.The aim of this research is to identify the caries risk in orthopedically handicapped children aged 6-12 years in SLB Negeri 1 Bantul Yogyakarta.
The methods. Descriptive observational study with total sampling technique was conducted to orthopedically handicapped children aged 6-12 years in SLB Negeri 1 Bantul Yogyakarta. Nineteen students were eligible as subjects and caries risk was assessed by the Caries Assessment Tool (CAT) of the American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (AAPD).
Results,The results revealed that 18 out 19 students have high risk of caries and 1 student with low risk of caries.
Conclusion. Most of orthopedically handicapped children aged 6-12 years old in SLB Negeri 1 Bantul Yogyakarta have high risk of caries.
