dc.description.abstract | The expansive soil is considered one of the most common causes of pavement distresses. Therefore, the expansive soil undergoes swelling and shrinking caused by moisture fluctuation. Ordinarily, piles have been used extensively for a foundation in swelling soil to reduce plate uplift movement caused by swelling of expansive soil. Moreover, the main idea of this study was to examine the behaviour of pile reinforced plate that called nailed slab system to control plate uplift movement. The small scale experimental investigation of nail slab system with a variety in the plate stiffness and the used of the vertical barrier has been made and compared with the result from finite element numerical analysis by using Plaxis. The soil was modeled to have about 30% swelling in Plaxis. The result indicated that the piles were functioning as heave reduction. Futhermore, mound profile of the plate depends on the degree of plate flexibility. The experimental result indicated in a good agreement with the numerical simulation by using Plaxis. | en_US |
