      Abstract
Speaking is one of four language skills which is very important because it is used to deliver the students’ feeling and idea. To enhance students’ speaking performance, teachers should facilitate students to always practice their speaking in the class. Based on the researcher’s observation, it was found that students faced problems on their speaking. To cope with students’ speaking difficulties, this research attempts to explore the effectiveness of Pair-taping method in improving the students’ speaking performance at SMK N 1 Godean Yogyakarta. The use of Pair-taping method is interesting to be studied because research in this area was still scarce conducted at Vocational High School. It is also important to study whether Pair-taping method could be the effective teaching method to enhance students’ speaking performance. In investigating the effectiveness of using Pair-taping method in experimental conditions, the researcher used one group pretest and posttest design as a research method. The participants consisted of 32 students of SMK N 1 Godean which were given four sets of treatment using Pair-taping method in a month. To see the improvement, the speaking test scores before and after the treatment were compared. The result showed that there was a significant difference which could be seen from the mean score of pretest and posttest. The mean score of pretest was 6, 84 and the mean score of posttest was 14, 81. In addition, the result of the hypothesis testing revealed that Sig. (2-tailed) was 0,000. It indicated that this research was significant because the Sig. (2-tailed) was lower than 0,005 (Sig < 0, 05). In addition, the t-value of the t-test was higher than the value of t-table (t0 15,247 > tt 2,042). Thus, the decision was to accept the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) and to reject the Null Hypothesis (H0). It could be inferred that Pair-taping method was an effective teaching method to improve SMK N 1 Godean students’ speaking performance. It could be seen by the significant difference score before and after the treatment in the pretest and posttest. This research is surely asserted that the using of Pair-taping method in teaching speaking could improve students’ speaking performance, especially in students’ fluency. Thus, it could be proved by the Effect Size score. The total of Effect Size was on 0.883. In conclusion, this research showed that the treatments were successfully affected on students’ speaking performance although some students could not get full of the treatments. Hence, students’ speaking performance improved after the treatment for SMK N 1 Godean students especially on students’ fluency.
