dc.descriptionBeing able to communicate well in English with others worldwide can be acquired by having good English speaking skills. English speaking skills consist of accuracy involving the correct use of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation practice, and fluency involving the ability to speak simultaneously. In fact, in pronunciation, students find difficulties because they live in a non-English speaking country. This research aims to explore factors in influencing students’ difficulties in pronunciation. A qualitative descriptive design was employed to answer the research question. In addition, the researcher used open-ended interview to collect the data. Then, five participants from students of the English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in batch 2013 were involved in this research. There are nine findings revealed in this research related to the factors that affect students’ difficulties in pronunciation, those are; interference of mother tongue, sound system between L1 and L2, interference of spelling forms and its pronunciation, inconsistency of phonetics in English, motivation, attitude, age, instruction of pronunciation, and exposure to the target languageen_US
