dc.descriptionNoun is one of word classes that can be modified with modifiers. The pre and post-modifiers will modify a noun becoming a noun phrase. Because of its’ complexity, the errors on the use of noun phrase probably occur. Therefore, this study was conducted to reveal the errors that occured on the use of noun phrase. This study only focused on investigating pre-modifiers of noun phrase because the structure of pre-modifiers is less obvious. Further, this study took place at SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Yogyakarta. There were 28 students in grade XI becoming the participants of this study. Then, 28 students’ writings were used to collect the data. The type of students’ writing was narrative genre text. Then, the data were analyzed using Error Analysis. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that there were 604 out of 693 total sentences that contained noun phrases. 543 out of 604 sentences were classified as correct noun phrases, while 61 sentences were classified as incorrect noun phrases. Then errors on the use of noun phrase occured on the use of determinative phrase (Error Type 1), adjectives (Error Type 2), and nouns (Error Type 6). Errors on type 1 lied on the use of quantifier ‘some’, articles, pronoun, and cardinal number. The error percentage on the use of quantifier ‘some’ was 4,92%. Then, there was 45,90% errors on the use of articles. The errors on the use of articles were the most common error found in this study. After that, there were 13,11% errors on the use of pronouns, and 1,64% errors on the use of cardinal number ‘two’. Furthermore, errors on type 2 occured on the use of incorrect word order of adjectives as pre-modifier. The error percentage on this type was 26,23%. Lastly, errors on type 6 lied on the use of plural noun and noun as pre-modifier. The error percentage on the use of plural noun was 1,64%. Meanwhile there was 6,56% errors on the use of nouns. Finally, the findings of this study may be useful in recognizing the errors on the use of noun phrase in the students’ writings.en_US
