POLITICAL THOUGHT MAHATMA GANDHI AND ABDURRAHMAN WAHID ON PLURALISM
Abstract
Gandhi believes that the notion of nonviolence is the most powerful force for mankind in the world, because violence will not solve a problem. Gandhi thinks that to be a follower of nonviolence must be willing to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of people's lives. Gandhi's way is very remarkable for a man like Gandhi who gave up his body soul to create a better world life by putting humanity forward. While Gus Dur is a figure of Indonesian people who have a way of political thought about pluralism with a neo-modernist thinking that produces progressive thinking movements that have a positive attitude about modernity, change and development of the nation in Indonesia. Gus Dur's liberal and inclusive style of thought is deeply influenced by his long research into the various treasures of traditional Islamic thought which resulted in an interpretation and contextualization of Islamic thought and national life in Indonesia. According to Gus Dur, Islamic Religion clearly shows the universal values that are theological inspiration for the development of a just and egalitarian and democratic society structure and statehood in which to protect and respect the basic human rights of sovereigns. Therefore Gus Dur is very determined to defend humanity in Indonesia which is a pluralistic country without distinction of certain groups.
