Background of this research is the fact that Kabupaten (Regency of) Aceh Barat Daya (Southwest Aceh) experiencing social change due to the process of proliferation of (administrative) region that it just passed through. Initially, the Aceh Barat Daya region was under Regency of (Kabupaten) Aceh Selatan (South Aceh), then the Government of Republic Indonesia decided it to be new Regency (Kabupaten) separated form Aceh Selatan. Meanwhile, the number of divorces happen in the new regency increase compared to condition before it becomes new regency so that the regency classified as regency with increasing number of divorce case by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. It is hypothesized that the social changes that occur after the region become new regency have an impact on increasing number of the divorce case. This study aims to describe the process of social change in the regency of Southwest Aceh, identify the changes that related to increasing number of divorce in the Regency of Aceh Barat Daya, and describe the relationship between changes in the economic status of wives with increasing number of divorce in Aceh Barat Daya. The research method used is the qualitative approach which requires an intensive approach to informants and the natural subject of research (natural setting). Techniques of collecting data in this study are observation, interview, and documentation. The results show that the social change occurred because of the developmental gap between Regency of Aceh Selatan and Regency of Aceh Barat Daya. The development of the new regency is fallen below the development of Aceh Selatan. Under the administration of Regency of Aceh Selatan, Aceh Barat Daya region witnessed the inequality of development for the wide range of region under the Aceh Selatan administration. The process of proliferation of (administrative) region that resulted in the set of Aceh Barat Daya as new regency led the new regency to the rapid progress in education, health, and other social affairs. However, the Regency of Aceh Barat Daya also experienced an increasing number of divorce after the change for the change of the wife social status occurred within the family. The divorce occurred for the lawsuit by the wife with civil servant status (Pengawai Negeri Sipil; PNS). The reason for divorce for the lawsuit (Talak Gugat) is that the husband is not working so the wife must fulfill the household need alone. The husband is lazy to work because they face difficulties to find a job and husband also began to keep full expectations on the wife's salary every month, so they think they do not have to work.
