PERANCANGAN DAN PEMBUATAN KAMPAS REM ORGANIK BERBAHAN LIMBAH KAYU
Abstract
Sawdust waste is an organic waste produced mostly from timber processing. Based on the previous research, wood material contains of cellulose ranging from 40% -50% of its weight. The purpose of this research is to determine the potential utilization of sawdust as the filler for producing organic brake lining that was asbestos-free and environmentally friendly.
The brake pad was made by using press molding method by utilizing the unused brake plate. The composition of the lining material was 60% of wood powder, 20% of epoxy, 10% of glass fiber, and 10% of crumb rubber. The character of brake pad was compared to the existing two types of products in the market, i.e. the genuine and imitation products. The properties which were evaluated: Brinnell's hardness, the threadbare of Ogoshi method, and the friction coefficient based on ASTM G115.
The result of Brinell hardness showed the value of hardness brake pad (0.99 HBN) was lower than those of the Genuine brake pads (1.25 HBN) and the Imitassion brake pad (1.42 HBN). The Ogoshi wear test showed that the brake pad X (0.256 𝑚𝑚2𝑘𝑔⁄) was higher than those of Imitassion (0.228 𝑚𝑚2𝑘𝑔⁄) and Genuine (0.164 𝑚𝑚2𝑘𝑔⁄). Meanwhile, the friction coefficient of the brake lining X was higher (0.694) than Imitassion (0.439) and Genuine (0.48).
