Abstract
The use of high efficiency materials is very advance in this era. Natural fiber composites is a material that was considered innovative because it has properties environmentally friendly, inexpensive, resistant to corrosion so it can potentially be used as an alternative material for replacing metal. Pineapple leaf fiber and E-Glass fibers which have high mechanical properties to be the reason that the background this study in which these materials are used as filler in the manufacture of composite applied to automotive components, especially on the bumper cars. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of variations in the composite lamina pineapple / E-Glass / PP against the impact toughness and water absorption.
Fabrication of composites using a hot press method and hand lay-up with ratio of 70:30 for the volume fraction of matrix and filler. A ratio of 2: 1 on pineapple fiber filler and E-Glass and variations performed using 10, 13, and 15 lamina. 6 mm fiber length with random fiber orientation. Tests were conducted impact test and water absorption. The results of the impact test fracture were characterized using a macro photograph and SEM.
The test results showed the increasing impact of the lamina the number of impact toughness to the composite value will be higher. The average value is highest at 15 lamina variation in the amount of 0.0193 Joule / mm2. While the water absorption test results showed that the percentage of water absorption and Thickness Swelling lowest for the composite with 10 lamina is equal to 4.89% and 3.52%. The results of the macro image and SEM characterization of the plates impact test shows the bond between the filler and the matrix is relatively good. Composites with 15 lamina have the highest impact toughness value because it has voids less than the variation 13 and 10 of the lamina.
