Abstract
Stainless steel 316L (SS316L) is a type of metal that is widely used in the field of medical devices manufacturing such as medical devices themselves and implants. This material SS-316L is chosen as dynamic compression plate (DCP) because it has good corrosion resistance characteristics, and easy maintenance. However, SS-316L has low tribological properties (wear and tear) compared with titanium or cobalt materia,l therefore surface treatment is required. Shot peening is one method of cold treatment (cold working) by firing the balls of steam at constant high speed on the surface of the specimen. The aim of the research is to know the effect of shot peening time variation after drilling the microhardness, surface roughness, macro and micro structures, geometry, and wettability on SS-316L DCP surface.
The treatment of shot peening was given on DCP SS-316L with dimensions of 105 mm × 14 mm × 4 mm with 6 parallel holes in the form of a circle with 5 mm diameter. The variables used are variation of steel ball shooting time they are 8 minutes, 10 minutes, and 12 minutes. With a 0.6 mm steel ball diameter, constant pressure of 6 bar, and nozzle spacing of 100 mm specimens.
The results showed that the shot peening process can change the macro structure so it formed craters on the surface. The shot peening process also changed the micro structure into the flat one. The result of wettability of the contact angle increased from 65,63° to 79,70°. The surface roughness increased from 0.83 μm to 2.05 μm. The geometric measurements which consist of plate thickness, plate hole diameter, and ellipse diameter decreased in size. The average result of microhardness increased from 247.3 HVN to 345.7 HVN.
