PENGARUH VARIASI WAKTU PERLAKUAN SHOT PEENING SEBELUM DRILLING TERHADAP SIFAT FISIS DAN MEKANIS PADA MATERIAL DYNAMIC COMPRESSION PLATE STAINLESS STEEL 316L
Abstract
Stainless steel 316L (SS AISI 316L) is the most common material used as a internal fixation device of dynamic compression plate (DCP) because of material costs and fabrication in making DCP plates cheaper than other metal implant materials, such as cobalt alloys and titanium alloys. However, the DCP SS AISI 316L plate has a deficiency with low fatigue resistance and wear. One way to resolve is to do work hardening with a shot peening method. This study aims to determine the effect of shot peening and drilling treatment on the physical and mechanical properties of DCP specimens.
DCP specimen plates have dimensions of 105 mm × 14 mm × 4 mm. The shot peening treatment is performed with constant spraying pressure 6 bar, the distance of the nozzle to the surface of the specimen is 100 mm, diameter of steel ball used 0.6 mm, and using three different treatment time parameters, 8 10 and 12 minute. DCP specimens were drilled to make 6 screw holes parallel to hole with diameter 5 mm.
The result of shot peening test with the variation of treatment time on the surface of SS AISI 316L material can change the macrostructure surface with the formation of the former creater steel ball impact and grain size of the microstructure becomes solid and flat. The surface roughness of DCP specimens increased from raw material 0.83 μm, after the shot peening treatment with variation of time 8, 10 and 12 minutes to 2.09 μm, 1.86 μm and 1.75 μm respectively. The wettability test results show the surface of the specimen is hydrophilic, evidenced by the surface contact angle <90°. The raw material contact angle is 78.94° and the contact angle formed with the shot peening time of 8 minutes, 10 minutes and 12 minutes were 69.93°, 73.54° and 75.5° respectively. Micro hardness increased from 274.3 VHN (raw material) to 383.1 VHN (shot peening 8 minutes). The thickness of the DCP specimen decreased from 3,701 mm (raw material), after dishot peening with treatment time of 8 minutes, 10 minutes and 12 minutes of thickness decreased to 3,682 mm, 3,670 mm and 3,643 mm respectively. Variation of shot peening treatment time for 8 minutes at most optimum time variation to optimize the physical and mechanical properties of DCP SS AISI 316L material.
