Sawdust waste is an organic waste mostly produced from timber processing which can locally be
found in surrounding region of Yogyakarta. The waste has not been optimally utilized; it has only been used
for fossil fuel substitution. The objective of this work is to determine the possibility of sawdust waste as
filler for epoxy matrix composite intended for brake lining. The linings were directly casted on to used
brake pad by means of press mold technique. In addotion to 60 vol% of sawdust and 20 vol% of epoxy
system, 10 vol% of chopped E-glass fiber and 10 vol% of synthetic rubber particle were added in order to
improve the properties. The properties being evaulated are its Brinnell hardness, ware rate using Ogoshi
method, and coefficient of friction. In addition to the proposed material, two types of brake lining available
in local market were also evaluated as reference. The result showed that the proposed material exhibited
higher coefficient of friction, as well as lower ware rate and Brinell hardness. It can be concluded that the
proposed material is suitable for brake lining considering that it will result in shorter braking distance,
longer service life, and lower braking pressure.
