      Abstract
      Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has become a crucial element for the survival of a country. This thesis discusses the Mexican government’s policy under Enrique Peña Nieto 's leadership to maintain FTA with the United States and Canada, NAFTA through renegotiation in order to prevent the United States from terminating the FTA. This paper aims to find out the background of the Mexican government’s policy to choose renegotiation with the aim of maintaining NAFTA rather than terminating the FTA. Therefore, the author adopt the foreign policy concept and rational choice theory as the framework of thinking of this thesis. Based on the literature studies method used by the author, the data is obtained through books, journals, articles and electronic sources. The result of this research shows that the direction of President Enrique Peña Nieto 's policies which adopted the principles of democracy and economic liberalization has become the backgrounds of his policy of maintaining NAFTA. In addition, economic interest were the main factor of the Mexican government’s policy to maintain NAFTA rather than terminate the FTA.
