Abstract
Hospital wastewater is one of environmental contaminants that can cause health problem as well as environmental ecosystem. Hospital wastewater treatment aims to neutralize the wastewater to be disposed and no impact on surrounding environment. Activated charcoal and zeolite are useful materials for filtering and neutralizing waste before disposal. Activated charcoal can be made from wastewater materials such as pieces of wood, coconut shells, corn cobs and other carbon-containing materials. Waste from remnant of coastal cottonwood material produced by furniture or other wooden craft very much and there is no economic value can be used as materials for activated charcoal. The purpose of this study to neutralize wastewater hospital passed the maximum limit regulations on wastewater quality and metal content (cadmium, chromium, and lead).
Activated charcoal making begins with carbonized material with retort, then activated chemically using sulphuric acid (H2SO4). Physical activation is done by re-charcoal oven chemically activated with a temperature of 800˚C for 2 hours. The adsorption process in the study using two variations, namely variation in flow rates of 0.5, 1, and 1.5 liters/min and a variation of sampling time on each flow in minute 0, 5, and 10. The results of the adsorption test liquid waste in accordance with the DIY Regional Regulation No. 7 Year 2016 concerning wastewater hospital operations.
Results showed the value of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentration after adsorption of zeolite stone at 46.5-59 mg/L and the activated charcoal adsorption with value levels between 25-51.3 mg/L with the value of the initial waste levels of 134.2 mg/L. Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) value after adsorption of zeolite stone that is 6-9 mg/L and after the activated charcoal adsorption with content value between 6.6-16.5 mg/L with the value of the initial waste concentration of 61.8 mg/L. the value metal content in the effluent does not change after doing adsorption with zeolite or activated charcoal stones
