Bleaching is defined as the treatment by applying chemicals material to remove stains from the teeth. The chemical materials of bleaching often causes side effect such as irritation of soft tissues. The star fruit can be used as the alternative materials because it contains of oxalic acid that can whiten teeth. The success of tooth whitening is affected by the length of material in contact with the teeth. The whitening materials make the teeth whiter if it contacts with teeth in a long period of time. Aim : the aim of this study was to determine the effects of different submersion period of teeth in starfruits (Averrhoa carambola) extract towards change of teeth color. Methods: this study was an in vitro experimental laboratory study. The sample of this study was 15 post extraction premolars. All of the samples were submersed in tea for 12 days to gain discoloration of the teeth. Samples were divided into 3 groups where each groups consists of 5 teeth. Then the teeth on each groups were submersed in starfruits (Averrhoa carambola) extract for 56, 88 and 126 hours. Spectrophotometer was used to measure the color of the teeth before and after the submersion. Data analysis were done by paired t-test, One Way Anova, and LSD (Least Significance Different). Results: the result of paired T-test is that the signification is p<0,05 (p= 0,000). This result proves that starfruits (Averrhoa carambola) extract affects the teeth color to become whiter. The result of One Way Anova test shows that p<0,05 (p=0,000). It shows that different period of teeth submersion has effect on the change of the teeth color. The LSD test result shows that p<0,05 (p=0,000). It means that there were significant differences on each group. The highest score is shown from the third group, that is the teeth that were submersed for 126 hours. So the most effective period to whiten the teeth using starfruits (Averrhoa carambola) extract is 126 hours. Conclusion : there are effects of different submersion period of teeth in starfruits (Averrhoa carambola) extract towards change of teeth color. The whitening materials make the teeth whiter if it contacts with teeth in a long period of time.
