Abstract
The incidence of DM are higher time to time and the level of knowledge and attitudes to prevent DM are still lack. Health promotion is implemented as early step to improve knowledge and attitude towards DM. The aim of this study was to know the effect health promotion program by audio visual media on knowledge level and attitude of diabetes mellitus prevention in Pedukuhan Kasihan Bantul Yogyakarta.
This research was a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group pretest and posttest design. Samples were fifty healthy people which were selected through purposive sampling and divided into control group (given leaflet) and the experimental (given video). Data were analyzed with descriptive analysis (demographics of respondents) and inferential analysis (wilcoxon test, paired t-test, mann whitney, pearson chi-square, kolmogorov-smirnov, fisher's exact, linear regression) and showed a significant difference if the level of significance p=<0,05.
There was an increased knowledge after given intervention in control and experimental group (respectively p=0,00) and there was no difference in knowledge and attitude between control and experimental group after given the intervention (respectively p=0,39 and p=0,62).
Educational leaflets and video were equally effective increased respondents' knowledge, but those did not affect the attitude. Nurses can use any leaflets or video to increase knowledge about prevention of DM. Further research can control the confounding variables that influence the knowledge and attitudes and provide interventions to improve attitudes toward the prevention of DM.
