STRATEGI PEMERINTAH SRI LANKA DALAM PENGEMBANGAN PARIWISATA SEBAGAI SUMBER EKONOMI BARU PASCA KONFLIK ETNIS TAMIL DAN SINHALA
Abstract
Over the decades, tourism has experienced continued growth and deepening diversification to become one of the fastest growing economic sector in the world. Modern tourism in closely linked to development and encompasses a growing number of new destinations. These dynamics have turned tourism into a key driver for socio-economic progress. Sri Lanka is country that experienced a 26-year conflict between Tamil and Sinhala. Government realized that tourism could contribute significantly to improve its post-conflict reconstruction and improve its global image as a completely new tourism destination and as a new country. Government of Sri Lanka realized the fact when tourist arrivals for significantly increase after conflict.
This research aim is to explain Sri Lanka main strategy in order to attract more visitors to their country and make tourism as new economic sector after their agriculture sector has collapsed due to conflict. Sri Lanka has two strategies used by the government to achieve its goals in tourism. First is by developing new destination in eastern area of Sri Lanka as the government set new tourist segment, which is high-end tourist. Second is through the promotion both domestically and internationally.
