      Abstract
Plastic materials are currently widely used in industry, engineering, and research. The large number of plastic material use today because plastic has superior properties such as material that is corrosion resistant, lightweight and relatively cheap price. But the material still has some drawbacks. To overcome the deficiencies and improve the quality of plastic, surface treatment can be done by coating them with electroless nickel plating method. The electroless Nickel plating process in this research uses Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic as a substrate an nickel as coating layer. To obtain maximum results, the variations used in this study were palladium with catalyst activation time 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 minutes. This study analyzed palladium activation time on Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic to the physical and mechanical properties of the coating layer by testing hardness, wear, surface roughness, and coating thickness resulting from the electroless stage of the specimen. In the electroless Nickel plating process with variation of palladium activation time obtained hardness and thickness tends to increase. While the roughness and wear tend to decreased. Based on this research, the specimen with best result obtained at activation time 12 minute with roughness value 0,556 μm, thickness 2,84 μm, hardness 84,5 SHN and wear 0,232 cm2 / Kg.
