      Abstract
Air freshener is a material that provide a pleasant odor. Liquid and gel air freshener regarded as a widely used in modern society. Various chemicals allegedly contained therein, such as ethanol, formaldehyde, seeds fragrances, naphthalene, phatale, phenol and xylene or its derivatives. Chemical substances enter the body through inhalation. Nasal cavity is the first part that was exposed by chemical, so, the evaluation of effect of air freshener exposure on respiratory mucosa needs to be done. The study design was performed by using post-test only control group design. The subject of the research were 18 tails of white rat, divided into three experimental groups, the negative control group (without exposed fragrances), liquid air freshener treatment groups, and the air freshener gel treatment group. In the treatment group performed fragrances exposure for 8 hours / day for 15 days. The result taken by measuring the thickness of the respiratory mucosal epithelium under the microscope. The results analyzed by using the Kruskal Wallis test followed by post hoc Mann-Whitney. Post hoc test result show that there is significantly differences between liquid air freshener group with gel air freshener group (p <0.05), and between group of liquid air freshener with the control group (p <0.05). No significant difference shown by the gel air freshener group with the control group (p> 0.05). This suggests that exposure of liquid air freshener have greater influence on the histological changes in the nasal respiratory mucosa compared to gel air freshener exposure
