ERROR CORRECTION TYPES IN STUDENTS’ SPEAKING AND WRITING AT LANGUAGE TRAINING CENTER UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH YOGYAKARTA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017
Abstract
Error correction is a correction that usually teachers give to the students in order to make the students’ improve their speaking and writing skill. There are a lot of types of error correction in students’ speaking and writing that are implemented by teachers. This research was conducted in Language Training Center of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta at four classes, which are regular and international free conversation classes and essay writing classes in academic year 2016/2017. The purpose of this research is to know the types of error corrections in students’ speaking and writing at LTC UMY. The methodology of this research involves descriptive qualitative design and also used descriptive approach. The results of this research show 8 types of error correction in students’ speaking, namely correction in front of the class after speaking, correction with feedbacks, correction in the forms of statements and questions, echo correction, correction in the form of reformulation, get it right correction , peer correction, and gentle correction. Moreover, in students’ writing, the researcher found 13 types of error correction that are implemented by teachers in LTC UMY, and those are circle and underline correction, indirect correction, focused correction, red pen correction, oral correction, direct coded correction, indirect coded correction, indirect uncoded correction, non-negotiated reformulate correction, prompt + reform correction, feedback with negotiation correction, additional exercise, and peer correction.
