ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS’ STRATEGIES TO FACE THE CHALLENGES IN THE CLASSROOM ORAL PRESENTATION AT UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH YOGYAKARTA
Abstract
Classroom oral presentation is one of the techniques that makes classroom condition alive and makes students active. Almost all teachers in English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta used oral presentation as an assignment in the classroom. This research aims to investigating the implementation of classroom oral presentation, the students’ challenges in classroom oral presentation, and the students’ strategies to face the challenges. The researcher used qualitative research design. The data of this research were collected from interviewing with three students of EED of 2014 who had experience in doing oral presentation in the classroom. The finding of this study showed that the students felt nervous and fear being graded during oral presentation in the classroom. The students also showed that the challenges in classroom oral presentation were linguistic challenges, nervousness, fear of being graded, inferiority, uneasy topic to understand, difficult work in team, limitation of time, and challenges in gaining audience’s attention. To overcome the challenges, the students used strategies, namely being confident, self-convincing, reading and understanding the material, talking and asking to friend, developing a good communication skill, planning the presentation, attracting visual aid, practice and simulation, making note, and managing time.
