ERROR ANALYSIS IN THE USE OF TENSES IN SPEAKING AMONG STUDENTS AT LANGUAGE TRAINING CENTER UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH YOGYAKARTA
Abstract
Speaking is considered as one of the difficulties in learning English because of lack of grammar mastery. Tense is part of speaking components belongs to grammar to achieve speaking accuracy. In fact, the errors of tense usage made by the students in speaking did still occur. This research aimed to find out tense errors in speaking. Descriptive qualitative design was used to achieve the research purpose. Language Training center (LTC) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) was a place to conduct this research in February 2017. Then, a number of participants were 25 students of International Program for International Relations (IPIREL) batch 2016. The observation transcription was the data taken in free conversation class using camera and video recorder. The method to collect the data was the observation. Besides, four steps of analysis method were employed to collect the data namely determining the data, identifying the errors, classifying the errors, and explaining the errors. Likewise, the errors in the use of tenses in speaking were classified into two types of error, the error of tense types and error classifications. In the error of tense types, there were eight errors found namely simple present, simple future, present continuous, present perfect, simple past, past perfect, present perfect continuous, and future continuous. Simple present was the most common errors in tenses usage, and the least error was found in present perfect continuous and future continuous. Also, in the error classifications, the errors were existed in misformation, omission, addition, and misordering. Misformation sentences were the most common errors and misordering took the part to be the least errors.
