STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ON STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING IMPLEMENTATION AT ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH YOGYAKARTA BATCH 2013
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to know the batch 2013 student’s perception about student-centered learning (SCL) that was implemented at English Education Department (EED) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). There were two main purposes in this study. The first purpose was to find out about students’ perception on kinds of activities lecturers give in the implementation of student-centered learning at EED of UMY. The second purpose was to know students’ perception about the strengths and weaknesses of student-centered learning. The subject of this study was 5 students in EED of UMY batch 2013. This study used interview as the instrument. Based on participants’ answer, the data showed that there were five activities of student-centered learning implemented in EED. Those activities were discussion, presentation, role play, problem-based learning, and project-based learning. In addition, the strengths of student-centered learning that mentioned by participants were having more critical thinking, having more confidence, having good teamwork, being more creative, having more motivation, having more knowledge, making students active in class, increasing speaking skill, being more independent, and being more responsible. On the other hand, student-centered learning has weaknesses based on participants’ point of view. Based on the analysis, the weaknesses of student-centered learning were making students passive, taking more time in doing activities of student-centered learning, making students dominant, and being demotivated.
