THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION AND THEIR ENGLISH PROFICIENCY LEVEL AT THE ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH YOGYAKARTA BATCH 2014
Abstract
Nowadays, second language is crucial in learning process in order to adjust it with globalization era. There are some factors which influence the learners to be succeed in acquiring a second language. One of them is motivation. This research was aimed to answer three research questions of the study namely: (1) What is the level of students’ motivation EED UMY? (2) What is students’ proficiency level at EED UMY? (3) Is there any correlation between student’ motivation and English language proficiency at EED UMY?. In this study, the researcher used quantitative research design. The instrument used to investigate motivation was adapted from Taguchi (Dornyei & Ushioda, 2011) and the TOEFL like score obtained in International Language Test course. The population of this research were 151 respondents at English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta students’ batch 2014. The sample of this research were 95 English Education Department of Universiats Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta which is 95 students will be take from 151 with 90% confidents level In collecting the data, the researcher used (Google form) to collect data. Then, the researcher analyzed the data by calculating it using SPSS program version 22.0. The result showed EED UMY students ‘motivation were 3.251, it belonged to category high motivation. EED UMY students’ proficiency were 486, it belonged to category intermediate level. Additional the result of inferential statistical analysis showed the result of correlation show that the sig2 tailed was .478. As requirement to the correlation to exist is less than 0.05. It mean that there is no correlation between students’ motivation and English language proficiency. Therefore, hypothesis was rejected.
